242nd Life Church Service 2016.5.22 John 16:7-16 “Knowing and Seeking the Fruit of the Spirit”
The disciples received the Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus. They were able to speak so that people from various parts could understand. Not all people are able to have similar strange experiences, however, that does not mean they cannot receive the promised Holy Spirit.
➀ The Spirit reveals the Truth.
John 16:13 “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.”
But what does this actually mean? What the Spirit reveals are:
John 14:26 “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
John 15:26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.”
John 16:14 “He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.”
John 16:15 “All that belong to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.”
John 3:34 “For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.”
The Spirit reveals:
・ Everything Jesus said to the disciples. (John 14:26)
・ About Jesus (John 15:26)
・ Glory of Jesus (John 16:14)
・ What belongs Jesus (John 16:15)
・ Words of God (John 3:34)
・
Therefore, the truth is Jesus himself. Without knowing Jesus, we cannot find “truth”.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
➁ The Bible is a product of the Spirit.
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
“The Spirit” and “The Word” are inseparable. (John 3:34)
➂ It is significant to seek the words of God in order to mature spiritually.
1 Peter 2:2-3 2 Like newborn babies, crave spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation 3now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “it is written, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
To grow spiritually, we must read the Bible. It should be read so that we can understand the real meaning rather than just skimming through. But first, we should make it a habit to read the Bible and use the time to focus on the Word since there are much temptation to lead us astray. Daily devotion from the pastor is available at Life Church which could assist in Bible reading. Needless to say, other devotionals are also available from various sources. The point is to set a time to spend with God daily.
➃ He created a new community which was the church.
Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Acts 2:46-47 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple court. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
