2017.8.20 1 Corinthians 11:17-20 ”Getting together in the name of the Lord.”
Church is not a building. People who believe in Jesus Christ and gather together are called Christians. The gathering of people (Christians) in the name of Jesus is the Church.
Today’s verse is commonly referred to The Lord’s Supper, however, it also teaches us why Christians gather together.
➀ Think how your meetings can do good.
1 Corinthians 11:17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good.
How can we change harm to good? Stop gathering? Build up meetings to do good?
What kind of meetings do more harm than good?
1 Corinthians 11:18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.
1 Corinthians 11:20 When you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat,
When we meet, we are gathering because we are called by Christ and not for our own satisfaction.
➁ We gather at the foot of Christ on the cross.
1 Corinthians 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you; The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,
1 Corinthians 11:24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
John 10:16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.
We gather to remember the cross of Jesus – His suffering and love. Therefore, meet to worship.
