2017.10.8 Matthew 20:20-28 ”Acquiring the Right Leadership”

A definition of leadership could be taken differently or preferred diffeently in the world as against what should be of Christian leadership.

Matthew 20:26-27 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant. 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave –

Leadership is “Influencing and developing a group of people in order to accomplish a purpose.”

Salt of Earth = Influence

Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

Light of the world = Influence

Matthew 5:14-16 14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

“Influencing and developing a group of people.”

Misunderstanding “Leadership”

✕ I am not suited to be a leader, therefore, there is no need to know about “leadership.”

✕ ”Leadership” is a training for “leaders-to-be.”

✕ ”Leadership” is a “technique” to guide a group efficiently.

✕ ”I don’t have the ability leadership.”

This is not to study on how to become a leader, but what influence we are expected to display to the people as Christians. When two or more people get together, we influence others in one way or the other.

We Christians are called to influence people in the world so that they will praise God.

⇒ Jesus wants all Christians to display “leadership (influence).”

⇒ Jesus will realize the will of God without fail!

➀ What kind of influence from others would make us happy?

warmth coldness

kindness viciousness

softness stubbornness

gentleness nervousness

honesty unfaithfulness

diligence laziness

humility arrogance

It seems natural that majority of the people would prefer to receive the kind of influence listed on the left side.

➁ Think how you are influencing the other people.

Matthew 7:12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

➂ How did Jesus influence his disciples?

Matthew 20:28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus did not come to show off his power nor to control us. God sent his Son to display all the good influences (as in ➀) so that we would understand.

➃ Imagine what Jesus expects of us in our growth and how we are to influence other people.

Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your lights shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
