2017.4.30 John 21:15-25 “Believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God”

Having been together and close to Jesus, John testifies that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and has written the gospel so that others like us will believe.

➀ Believe in the love of Jesus

John 21:17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love?”

Resurrection is proof of God’s love and to believe is to know that God loves us and we can be changed. Peter betrayed Jesus three times. Jesus asked the same question, “Do you love me?” three times, not to attack Peter but to show his love and forgiveness – the same love and forgiveness for us.

It was Jesus who approached Peter and not the other way and likewise God is calling us.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

➁ Know that the call of Jesus is the call of love.

John 21:15 … “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

John 13:34-35 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have love you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

“Feed my lambs” in other words is “Love one another.” Jesus wants us to find the lost sheep and guide them into a pen (church). “Feed my lambs” shows the love of Jesus and his trust in Peter despite his errors, which demonstrates God’s love for us and trust in us – a call on us to find the lost sheep and be connected to church.

“Feed my lambs” is a vision of Jesus: [My sheep / lambs] = [Those who believe Jesus]
             [sheep (plural)] =group = Church

1 Peter 5:2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;

Consider what the goal is for each of the following:

Bible study – to improve your knowledge of the Bible? – to raise the flock.

Fellowship – to show friendliness? – to raise the flock.

Personal mission – to guide someone to salvation? – to raise the flock

Service – to help someone? – to raise the flock.

and be connected to Church.
