2017.5.7 Galatians 5:13-26 “Seeking the fruit of the Spirit”

Galatians 5:22-23 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

➀ Walk by the Spirit

Galatians 5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

➁ Know the desires of flesh

Galatians 5:15 If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

Galatians 5:19-20 19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatory and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

Galatians 5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

“The desires of flesh” does not only mean the acts of sinful nature.

The problem with “the desires of flesh” is the ultimate break up in the gathering of Christians (church) – “…watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.” – leading to the herd of sheep being scattered – and becomes unable to accomplish the mission of Jesus.

➂ Know the fruit of the Spirit

Galatians5:13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.

Galatians 5:14 The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Galatians 5:22-23 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

“Living by the Spirit” is not to live theoretically nor morally.

“Living by the Spirit” is to bring blessing and to bear “the fruit of the Spirit” in the church.

“But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.”

“The entire law is summed up in a single command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

So that the herd of sheep will be guarded and made strong and enables to accomplish the mission of Jesus.
