2017.9.3 Colossians 3:12-17 “Getting together in the name of the Lord” – Practice version.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all righteousness.

What is the prerequisite of today’s verse (Colossians 2:12-17)? Paul wrote the letter not to an individual but to the church of Colossians, as answers to their doubts, remembering each member of the church and its activities. The church being active, Christians get together in the name of the Lord and not just getting together but having fellowship (personal relationship).

Colossians 2:19 He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

There seem to have been some people who went his own way of teaching instead of what Jesus had taught. God loves us even before we knew Him and despite our sin. He even sent Jesus to die for our sins. Sin is being ignorant and separating from God and forgetting we are loved by God. Therefore, we want to get together and remember God ‘s love through fellowship.

➀ Think for whom you are applying this teaching

Colossians 3:12-13 Therefore, as God’s chosen people holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

We know we have heard and read this verse and understand is significance. However, can we imagine the person to whom we need to compassion, show kindness, be humble, gentle and have patience? Can we imagine anyone we have to bear with or forgive whatever grievances. The letter is addressed to the church of Colossians, however, it could also apply to our church today as well.

➁ Think why you are practicing this teaching

Colossians 3:12-13 Therefore, as God’s chosen people holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

There may be times when the fault is a hundred percent on the other, however, so are we before God and Jesus. Yet God has loved us and forgiven us. If we as Chistians would want to be like Jesus and have love like Jesus, then we should start practicing His teaching.

➂ Think how you practice this teaching

Colossians 3:14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

If we were to practice all these virtues, we need to have love and put into practice in small groups – sharing our imperfectness and sinfulness.
