2017.4.23 John 21:1-25 “Believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God”

We are all sinful and we are not able to win forgiveness/God’s salvation ourselves. We need to know that God loves us as imperfect as we are. Furthermore, we are not just saved but given a purpose of living with a mission.

Matthew28:19-20 (The Great Commission) 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”

Luke 24:46-48 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things,

Q: Is there any message related Great Commission by Jesus in the gospel of John?

A: Yes

15 “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” …”Feed my lambs.”

16 “Simon son of John, do you love me?” …“Take care of my sheep.”

17 “Simon son of John, do you love me?” …“Feed my sheep.”

➀ Responding to the question, “Do you love me,” from Jesus after resurrection.

John 21:17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Matthew 28:16-17 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.

“Do you love me?” = “Do you believe me?”

The faith we have should not be just “to believe the resurrection of Jesus” but “to love Jesus who resurrected.”

Furthermore, “Do you love me?” = “Will you follow me?”

John 21:19 …Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

➁ Responding to the call from Jesus: “Feed my sheep.”

John 21:15 … “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

Understand the vision of Jesus from his words, “Feed my sheep.”

”My sheep/lambs” = “Those who believe Jesus”

“sheep (plural)” = group = church

1 Peter 5:2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;

John 10:16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.

The resurrection of Jesus after being put on the cross proves Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Believing Jesus is to follow his command, i.e. to make groups of people who believe – disciples – who will gather together in the name of Jesus, the church.
